FAQ: What to Expect
It's genuinely tough to give a one-size-fits-all answer regarding the number of songs we can record or mix in a single day because every project is unique, especially when we're collaborating with new artists. Think of the estimates below as a starting reference point that can shift based on your specific needs.
Recording Sessions
Full band: For a typical day session with four or five musicians, the first few hours are usually dedicated to setup: positioning microphones, checking levels, and getting each instrument sounding just right. After that, it’s possible to track anywhere from one to four “live” songs on the first day. The more rehearsed the band, the more you can get recorded efficiently.
On the following day(s), a baseline expectation for a full band is recording between two and eight tracks daily. However, this range is flexible. Some projects might quickly capture 15–20 simple acoustic guitar parts in a day, while others might spend an entire week layering and producing a single intricate track. Daily progress will depend on:
- The complexity of the arrangement.
- The skill and preparedness of the musicians.
- Whether you choose to record the band live together or overdub each instrument separately, or both.
- The project's overall budget and schedule.
Solo Artist: Recording as a solo artist usually involves tracking multiple instruments across separate takes. You might record vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums, or other parts individually, which naturally takes more time than a live band setup.
If certain instrumental parts are outside your comfort zone, a session musician can be provided to ensure your songs reach their full sonic potential. Factors influencing the timeline include:
- The number and complexity of instruments in each arrangement.
- Your familiarity and preparation with each part.
- Whether parts are overdubbed individually or recorded alongside a session musician.
- The project's overall budget and schedule.
Mixing Sessions
When it comes to mixing, we generally advise planning for one to two full band songs per day. Much like recording, the total time required can vary dramatically. Tracks with simpler instrumentation will move faster than highly dense, multi-layered arrangements that require significant sonic experimentation and detailed automation. This is finalizing everything for Mastering.
Mastering Sessions
Mastering is the final step where we polish the sound, optimize the volume for distribution, and ensure your tracks sound consistent across all platforms. A good baseline is **4-6 songs per day**. For an entire album or EP, we often schedule a half-day or full-day session to ensure the entire body of work has a unified, cohesive sound.
Our goal is always to deliver the highest quality product. If you have a firm deadline, please let us know when booking, and we'll do our absolute best to accommodate it.
Do you offer production help?
Absolutely. If you're coming in with a raw idea, a simple song on acoustic guitar, or a basic beat, we can step in as your **Producer** to help shape the arrangement, suggest instrumentation, arrange session musicians, and guide the project to a finished product. Our production rates are available upon request and depend on the scope of work.
What should I bring to my session?
Bring your instruments, fresh strings/drum heads (if applicable), and any specific gear you can't live without. Most importantly, bring **prepared and rehearsed material!** Studio time is expensive, and being ready to perform is the best way to save money and get the best results. We supply a full drum kit, mics, cables, amps, and a variety of instruments. Check our Step Inside page for a full gear list.
